Victor Altonen

Victor Altonen, 94, formerly of Lopatcong Township, Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on January 27, 2013 at Praxis Alzheimer's Facility where he was lovingly cared for by an outstanding staff. Born on February 17, 1918 in Pohatcong Township, he was the son of the late William and Hilma (Konila) Altonen from Finland. He was the husband of the late Jean (Burgstresser) Altonen for 63 years before her passing. After graduating from Phillipsburg High School he served his country honorably in the Army where he became a Technical Sergeant during WW II. He was on Omaha Beach on D-Day and fought many fierce campaigns during his 4 1/2 years in the 56th Battalion. Following his service, he was employed by the NJ Bell Telephone Company for 37 years. He was also known for building numerous homes throughout the Rosehill Heights, NJ area. Surviving are a son, Victor C. Altonen and his wife Alanea, of Lower Saucon Township, PA; a daughter, Susan, wife of the late Anthony Albert, of Williams Township, PA; his beloved grandchildren: Gregory Altonen, Molly Watson, and Eric Albert; and their 6 children. He was preceded in death by his siblings: August, Helen, George, William, May, and Edwin. Services: A Memorial Service will be held privately by the family.
