He was the beloved husband of Joan Marie (Sock) Varano for 59 years. Born in Shamokin on July 7, 1940, he was the son of the late Anthony and Rose (Schiccatano) Varano. A first generation Italian-American only child, Sam enjoyed growing up spending a lot of time with his cousins and extended family. He lived at the family shoe repair business, Sam Varano & Sons on Market Street in Shamokin. Sam attended St. Edward’s (Lourdes Regional) High School where he met Joan and was a three-sport athlete. He attended Bloomsburg State College and studied education. After marrying Joan, they lived in Northeast Philadelphia then later moved to Red Hill. Sam was a teacher for the Centennial School District for 36 years where he taught 4th grade at Willow Dale Elementary and is remembered fondly by many former students to this day. He served on the Upper Perkiomen School Board for 10 years. He was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Pennsburg. Sam was an avid sports fan of the Eagles, Phillies, and Notre Dame football, which he enjoyed watching with a beer. Many knew him as a high-arching slow pitch softball pitcher during his thirties. He especially enjoyed trips to Notre Dame football games, Wednesday lunches with special friends, his many dogs, and spending time with his family. His greatest joy in life was becoming a grandfather. His three grandchildren enjoyed their Poppu. He was very proud to attend their activities.
