Roland H. Spaar, 87, of Harleysville and formally of East Greenville, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2021. He was the son of the late Roland W. and Althea M. (Stoudt) Spaar. He worked with his father for many years in the Spaar’s Flower Shop in East Greenville. Following his father’s passing and the closing of the business, he worked in property maintenance for local realtors in the Upper Perkiomen Valley for several years. He also worked as a realtor for Gerald Snyder & Associates in Lansdale and he assisted his uncle Kurney in car sales for the former Spaar dealership in Palm. He was also the owner/landlord of an apartment complex in East Greenville. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Schwenksville and a former member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Pennsburg where he served as an usher for many years. He also served as Troop Leader and merit badge counselor for St. Philip Neri Boy Scout Troop #591 in East Greenville. He was also a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America in the Pottstown and Boyertown chapters and the Ontalonee Car Association. With his interest in cars, he restored antique vehicles. He built radio controlled cars and a track called the Washington Lane Speedway across from his home in East Greenville. He also built and flew radio controlled airplanes.
We ask you to remember Roland as a man of integrity, humility, kindness, and compassion. Someone else’s sadness would always bring a tear to his eye. He lived life with a passion for antique cars, music, storytelling and eating shrimp. According to Roland, he was always “dressed to the nines”. Roland was like a ray of sunshine; his smile could light up a room. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He loved his country and served 2 years in the army at Camp Erwin in the Mojave Desert. He served as mayor of East Greenville from 1970 to 1974 an also served on Borough Council and the Zoning Hearing Board. He was devout in his faith and served as church organist for several years. He also acted as a driver for the nuns of his parish. In retirement he enjoyed creating unique flower arrangements for friends, family, and community. He and his loving companion Jeanne of 23 years traveled extensively. They loved dining out, entertaining and creating a beautiful home environment. They shared a love of doing volunteer work together.
Roland is survived by his life partner Jeanne Bishop with whom he resided; his children, Stephanie Kaegebein, Andrea Visocky, and Jonathan Spaar and his wife Kelly; grandchildren: Phillip and Nicholas Skokowski, Alexander and Samantha Visocki, and Amanda and Jack Spaar; and a great grandson, Ezra Pacheco. He was also loved like a father and grandfather by Jeanne’s children, Lori Solinger and partner Keith Miller, Jami Righter, and husband Tom; grandchildren; Josh Righter and fiancé Taylor Freisher, Justin Righter and fiancé Shannon Zabko, Candice Righter and fiancé Dan Parrish, Jamie Solinger of Florida; and a great grandson, Max. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Joan Barr of Nazareth, Dianne Blair of Allentown and brother-in-law Paul Campbell of Sydney, Australia.

At his request, there will be no viewing and he will be cremated. All are invited to gather from 10-11 am with a Funeral Mass to be held at 11 am on Thursday, August 12, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 40 Spring Mt Rd, Schwenksville, PA 19473. Following the Mass, he will be laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery, Pennsburg with military honors.
