John Leon Michno

June 8, 1946 — February 13, 2024

We are very sorry to have had to say good bye to our father, John Michno, this week. We knew we had limited time left with him after he was diagnosed with prostate & bone cancer, but there never is enough time when you love someone so much.

John was born in Pennsylvania coal country & grew up in Manville, NJ, the son of Leon & Sally Michno & brother to MaryAnn & Jeanette. John may have been the youngest child but he loved his sisters with the fierce protective nature of a big brother. The family was fortunate enough to have many wonderful aunts, uncles & cousins that he was close with & made wonderful memories with.

After John graduated high school, he was drafted into the Army for the Vietnam War. John served from 1965 - 1967. He was a proud Veteran.

After John returned home from Vietnam, he met the love of his life, Shirley at a local dance hall. Their first date was a trip down the shore. They married July 1969, John was 23 & Shirley 19. 2 young kids with lots of love to give. Together John & Shirley had four children, Suzanne, Jill, Jennifer, & Mark. The family grew up together in Neshanic, NJ, & their home was always the place to be. Friends and family were always welcomed with open arms & made to feel right at home. John was a loving father & cherished every moment the six of them could spend together from pool parties to hunting or fishing trips to simple family dinners.

He was everyone’s number one supporter, the first to crack a joke, the proud father of his children, and the grandfather who loved to share special moments and activities with each of his grandchildren.

Anyone who knows him, knows how much he loved hunting & fishing. Sports that he shared with family & friends. He was especially proud to share them with his father, his son & then later his grandkids & sons in law. He was the tradition keeper - Christmas Eve dinner with the appearance of Santa Claus, gourmet celebratory dinners, pierogi making & more. We will keep those traditions going. We will always remember his laugh that could fill the room, his generosity, and his incredible cooking. We are going to miss his corny jokes, his fish tales, the happy hours, elaborate menus and so much more.

He is survived by his children, Suzanne Drake, Jill Lonergan, Jennifer O’Connor & Mark Michno, his 3 son in laws, Kevin Drake, Kevin Lonergan & Brian O’Connor, his 6 grandchildren, Maren & Braden Drake, Jake & Wade Lonergan & Mason & Reegan O’Connor, his sister’s MaryAnn Buckowski & Jeanette Pavan & her husband Richard Pavan, his sister in law, Patricia Bondra & her husband (his brother from another, mother) George Bondra & many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his wife Shirley Michno, his mother & father, Leon & Sally Michno, his father & mother in law Joseph & Helen Nagy & his daughter in law, Kari Michno.

Services will be private, a celebration of life is planned for a later date.
