Joan Marie Varano (Sock)

Joan (Sock) Varano, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Joan was the devoted wife of the late Samuel Varano, Sr., with whom she shared 59 years of marriage before his passing in 2024. She was the beloved mother of Angela Riley (Brian) of Harleysville and Samuel Varano (Marcey) of Chalfont. Joan was also the proud and adoring grandmother of Vincent Riley, Samantha Varano, and Nicholas Varano, who were the absolute light of her life. She is survived by her brothers, Robert Sock and Phil Sock (Kathy).

Joan lived a life marked by selfless love and unwavering devotion to her family. Her warmth, wit, and joy made her a constant source of comfort and laughter. She cherished simple pleasures—boxed white wine, Neil Diamond, and ABBA on the Alexa and the ocean, which held a special place in her heart.

One of Joan’s final wishes was to see the ocean one last time. With some persistence (and lots of love), her grandson Vincent made that dream come true this past Thanksgiving. The two went to dinner at a beautiful restaurant on the beach—a moment both would cherish forever.

Joan had a soft spot for dogs, especially her beloved Charlie, who brought her immense joy in her final year. Charlie now lives with Angela and her family and continues to be to loved and cared for. Angela made this promise to Joan.

A faithful supporter of her grandchildren, Joan never missed a sporting event, proudly cheering them on while lovingly telling her husband to tone it down. She was their biggest fan—and never stopped talking about them. (Truly. Never.)

Joan also had one self-admitted addiction: purses. A daily online shopper, she had so many that she would often gift one to visitors. Her favorite brand was Vera Bradley, and let’s be honest—she probably could have opened her own store.

A woman of deep faith, Joan was a devoted Roman Catholic and a loyal parishioner at St. Philip Neri Church in Pennsburg for over 50 years.

Joan Varano was born on February 20, 1942, in Shamokin, PA. She graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School (formerly St. Edward’s) and briefly entered the convent before discerning a different path. She later met Samuel.

They married in 1964 and moved to Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia, where Samuel began his teaching career. Joan worked as a secretary at Pearson’s Sporting Goods and Rohm & Haas, all while earning her bachelor’s degree at night from St. Joseph’s University. She went on to teach in the Philadelphia School District for a year before the family moved to Red Hill in 1973—a place they would call home for the rest of their lives.

Joan’s life was a testament to love, loyalty, and laughter. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, and all those who were lucky enough to know her.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 28, from 10-11am at Church of Saint Philip Neri. 1325 Klinerd Road Pennsburg, PA. Services will follow at 11am
