Herb Thomas passed away peacefully on August 19, 2024, surrounded by family after a brief battle against cancer. He is survived by his wife Jennifer Thomas (nee Dove), his daughter Michele Karp (Kevin), his daughter April Thomas, grandchildren Derek Karp, Nora Karp, Noah Karp and Dylan Leclerc. He was predeceased by his parents Herbert K Thomas and Patricia Ann Thomas (Ryan). He is also survived by his siblings William Thomas (Rose), Robert Thomas (Kathryn), Frank Thomas (Christine), Diane Thomas, his Aunt Eileen Casnet, many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his close friends Bruce Jackson and his daughter Bridgette Jackson, and Steve Kutzera.
Herb spent many years working in upper management for NCR until he decided to follow his natural entrepreneurial instincts and started his own landscaping business, MasterCuts. However, to those that knew him it was obvious that golf was Herb's real passion. He had been a member of the Steel Club since 1996 and taught his brothers and cousin to golf, thus making sure that all their wives were Golf Widows. A three handicap, he never achieved every golfer’s dream of a hole in one, odds of which is 12,000:1. He did, however, record two Double Eagles, a statistical anomaly considering the odds of getting just one is six million to one.
Herb and Jenn loved to travel, especially to warm and sunny islands, during winter to escape the cold and snow that comes with the Hellertown winters. Their travels took them to Costa Rica, Mexico, the Caribbean, several trips to Hawaii and other beautiful locations. One of his most memorable trips was to Jamaica during the Eagles and Patriots Super Bowl game in 2018, and when the Eagles won the Super Bowl, the win was celebrated by a late-night foray into the pool.
Herb was an avid Philadelphia fan. He not only bled Eagles green, but rooted for his Phillies, Sixers and Flyers. Known to his friends as Herb the Kid, he was a giant kid at heart. He was great at giving life advice and his council was sought out by so many. He was kind and wise, always there to give you a hand if needed. You never had to look for Herb in a room, as you could usually hear him over any crowd. He didn't embrace life, he engulfed it. His never-ending optimism was infectious, which along with his humor never wavered throughout his battle with cancer.
As per Herb’s wishes, there will be no funeral. The family will be having a Celebration of Life privately. In Lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the American Brain Tumor Association at abta.org
