Frank Barrows

May 17, 1931 — April 30, 2011

Korean War veteran Frank M. Barrows passed away at age 79 at his home in Rincon, Ga., on April 30, 2011 surrounded by his wife Charlotte, close family members and his faithful dog, Winston. Born May 17, 1931 in Renovo, he was the son of the late Sidney L. Barrows and Kathryn (Fredrickson) Barrows of Renovo. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers, Wilma, Kathryn, Phyllis, Bruce and Edgar. He is survived by his wife Charlotte; two step-children, Gary Long of Atlanta, Ga., Shelley Waugh of Copenhagen, N.Y.; and three brothers, Glenn of Taylor, Texas, Wayne of Myerstown and Stanton of Pennsburg. Frank will be remembered for his love of the military, his love of country, his love for people, his love for dogs and his sense of humor. He joined the United States Army July 22, 1948 and served his country well as a member of the 24th Infantry Division Korea. Frank served three tours of duty in Korea and one in Vietnam. Like many war heroes of his generation, Frank never complained about the horrors of combat that he witnessed, nor did he offer any details of his war time in Korea, only after discovering his service records some 60 years later did even his closest family members learn that he had received The Bronze Star Medal, The Korean Service Medal with one Silver Service Star and Three Bronze Service Stars and several other commendations. On Feb. 1, 1966 Frank married the love of his life Charlotte (Shelly) of Galeton and they have since devoted their lives to each other. After 26 years Frank retired from the military and went on to work at IBM for another 15 years in Austin, Texas. After retiring from IBM, Frank and Charlotte moved to the Savannah, Ga., area where together they lived life to the fullest, depending only on each other. Frank was truly an American Hero and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Frank attended the Rincon United Methodist Church, he was a member of the VFW and the Masonic Lodge Utica, N.Y. Services will be held at a later date at the discretion of the family.
