Elva Phillips

Elva Phillips, 81, of the Lutheran Community at Telford, and formerly of Red Hill, died December 3, 2008. She was the wife of Rev. R. William Phillips Jr. They were married 57 years this past January. Born in Pottstown, she was a daughter of the late Oliver B. and Laura V. (Johnson) Place. She graduated from West Chester University in 1949 with a B.S. in Music Education. She was the former organist for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Hill. Before that, she was the organist at Messiah Lutheran Church, Downingtown. From 1955 to 1965, she was the organist for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Nashville. She was a supply organist for other local churches. She began her career as a teacher at the North Coventry School District. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Hill, and is a past president of the Perkiomen Valley Women’s Club. Surviving with her husband are sons: William Bradford Phillips, and his wife, Amy, of Downingtown; David Arthur Phillips, of Royersford; and Richard Wayne Phillips, and his wife, Lee, of Breinigsville; daughters: Gail Louise, wife of Charles Koup, of Wilkes-Barre; and Trudy Ann Phillips, wife of Craig Newberger, of Lansdale; a brother, Aaron Elwood Place, of Royersford; 11 grandchildren: William, Ryan, Tiffanie, Daelyn, Jessica, Laura, Heather, Lauren, Kyle, Arianna, and Jacquelyn; and 1 great-granddaughter, Karleigh. Services will be at 11:30 AM on Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Hill. A Viewing will be from 10-11:30 at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
