Edward O. Weiss, 94, formerly of Palm, PA, passed away peacefully at Marquette Hospice House in Meadville, PA on December 25, 2018. Ed, a noted hunter, bowman, golfer and all-around sportsman, was the proprietor of the historic Palm Hotel for 17 years. Ed’s parents: the late Herman and Susanna (Jabs) Weiss immigrated from Germany in the early 1900’s and acquired three historic Perkiomen Valley Hotels. These hotels were part of the Valley’s social and business life since before the turn of the century. Ed’s brother, the late Herman Weiss was the proprietor of the Green Lane Hotel, his sister: the late Sue (Schelkopf) along with her husband Stanley were the proprietors of the Sumneytown Hotel. “Eddie” Weiss grew up in Green Lane with an entire tribe of friends who fished, hunted, played sports and pushed over outhouses together. He graduated from East Greenville High School in 1941, joined the United States Navy and served honorably during WWII in Pearl Harbor for two years. He married his high school sweetheart, Grace (Urffer) in 1943. The new family moved to the Palm Hotel in 1947, with their 2-year-old daughter Paula, and newborn son, Edward Max “Max”. Ed and Grace managed the Palm Hotel for 17 years. During that time, Ed distinguished himself as a master sportsman. He was a Pennsylvania State Archery Champion in 1954 and traveled the state staging exhibitions. He was Indian Valley Country Club Golf Champion. He skied throughout the state. He hunted multiple states with his bow. Member of the Ironworkers Union, and worked on the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant in PA. Ed was a founding member of the Perkiomen Valley Bowmen, and extensively hunted in Sullivan County, PA where he was a member of the Green Lane Club, and later, owned his own hunting lodge. Ed shot the largest buck of his life from a tree with a bow when he was 79. In 1965, Ed married Anne (Stoddard) of Perkiomenville, and settled at Ziegler Rd, on Mill Hill where he loved to hunt. Ed and Anne were long time, active members of Shepherd of the Hills UCC, in Bechtelsville, PA. After Ann passed away in 2007, Ed was invited to join Max’s home in Meadville, where Max is an attorney, and where Ed felt at home in the Pennsylvania mountains. Ed is predeceased by his brother Herman, sisters: Suzanna Shelkopf and Dolly M. Kleinbach. Ed is survived by his children: Paula Weiss-Martin, wife of Steven W. Martin, Lexington, VA, Edward Max Weiss and his wife Lisa (Willow), their children: Alicia, wife of Tyler Stanton and Katie, wife of Dan Haseltine, their sons: Noah and Max of Nashville TN, Summer, wife of Rob Curwen and their children: Adam and Lucy of Nashville, TN, Ed’s daughter: Joanne Susan, wife of David Carney, their son Sean Carney, and his wife Amy, their son Owen William and Aiden of Virginia; Joanne’s daughter Katherine, wife of William Hurd and their sons Clayton Edward and Jacob Michael of South Carolina. Ed is survived by his stepchildren: Joseph T. Stoddart III, and his wife Grace of Macungie, Michael J. Stoddart, of Benecia CA, Daniel T. Stoddart of Lancaster, Elizabeth Emery of Cold Springs, TX, Jeanne, wife of John Fitzgerald of Auburn, CA, Linda, wife of Dennis Hillegass of Quakertown, Eleanor Sadorf of Sumneytown, and Anne Marie Troy of Allentown. Services will be 11AM, Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory, 163 Main Street, Pennsburg, PA 18073. All are welcome to gather beginning 10AM at the funeral home. He will be interred at Frieden’s Union Cemetery, Sumneytown. In lieu of flowers, thank God for the beauty of nature and its wildlife.
