Dorothy Lawfer McCarthy Dorothy Lawfer “Dot” McCarthy, 94, of Allentown died Tuesday December 20, 2011 at Fellowship Manor in Whitehall, PA. Born in Allentown on February 6, 1917, Dot was the daughter of the late W. Levan Lawfer and Milrded Koch Lawfer. She was a 1934 graduate of Allentown High School and attended Pine Manor Junior College and Erskine Business School in Boston, MA and Cedar Crest College in Allentown. She was married to the late John J. “Jack” McCarthy, owner of Refwal Construction, for 40 years. Dot was co owner of the Alfred Holman Dress Shop on W. Tilghman Street in Allentown beginning in 1965. Dot volunteered for decades with several local charitable organizations including The American Red Cross as a Gray Lady, the Allentown Hospital Auxiliary, the Lehigh Valley Hospital Gift Shop and Lehigh County Meals on Wheels. Dot was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Allentown, the Mercantile Club of Emmaus and a former member of Lehigh Country Club. Survivors: Children William J. McCarthy of Palm City, Florida; Patricia M., wife of Eric D. Weiss of Allentown; daughter-in-law Susan McCarthy of Bonita Springs, Florida; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her son John J. McCarthy, Jr.; great granddaughter Jane Greene and her brother William Lawfer.
