David R Young, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease on February 25, 2016. He was the husband of Nancy (Penniman) Young for more than 60 years. Born January 8, 1933 in Bethlehem to John W. and Helen (Lynn) Young, he graduated from Liberty High School in 1950 where he was a stand-out distance runner. After attending Mercersburg Academy he graduated from Penn State with a degree in Geography. He served his country in the Navy on Picket ships in the North Atlantic. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he began his career as a mining supervisor at the Grace Mines in Morgantown PA. He enrolled at Franklin and Marshall College to further his education, majoring in marketing and advertising. He then began a new career in advertising at Raybestos Manhattan Corp. in their brake linings division. He then moved on to be advertising manager at US Gauge and finally worked 25 years in the advertising department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, retiring in 1993. He was known by everyone for his keen wit, sense of humor, and laid back personality. His creative touch could be seen in everything he did. After retirement he and Nancy moved to Maine where they became avid travelers, much of it by bicycle. He was passionate about gardening, wood-working and sailing. In retirement, he and Nancy enjoyed hosting week long rug braiding camps where his cooking and fun sense of humor became a highlight for the guests. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother (Jack) Clarksville, GA, a son Stephen (Lisa)Young of Port Charlotte, FL, a daughter, Kari Gearhart (Jeff) of Ambler, PA and four proud grandchildren, Stephen Jr., Sean, Tyler, and Paige.
