Clayton Schticter Wert, 89, of Hellertown, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009, with his wife of 37 years, Carolyn, at his side. His great humor, sharpness and upbeat personality never left him. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Oliver and Sadie (Schticter) Wert. During WWII he served in the Navy, studied electronics, and worked for RCA as a technician until he retired. Fondly known as “Clayt,” “Claytie Baby,” and “Denny,” he was the former owner of the Meadow Grove, currently known as The Meadows which started in 1953 as a picnic table under a maple tree and became a popular place to gather for picnics and clambakes. He was an avid golfer, bowler, casino goer and he loved poker once a month with the guys. A world traveler, he and Carolyn ventured to China, Russia, Europe, India, the Middle East and more, at times facing machine guns!!! He had tales of quite a few escapades.
