Clayton Edward Apgar, 89, of Bethlehem, and formerly of Macungie and Phillipsburg, passed away on February 11, 2013 at Saucon Valley Manor, Hellertown. Born in Phillipsburg NJ on July 31, 1923, he was a son of the late Ellsworth “Mike” and Myrtle (Dehart) Apgar. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1941 and from Lafayette College in 1963 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Clayton was employed as an engineer with ATT Technology for 29 years, retiring in 1985. Prior to that, he was employed by Ingersoll-Rand, Phillipsburg, as a machine operator and shop foreman. During WWII, Clayton served with the Army as a Tech Sergeant with the 45th Division in the European Theater, including Anzio Beach. He received many medals including : a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, The European, Africa, and Middle East with 5 campaign stars, the WWII victory, the Good Conduct, and the Combat Infantry Medals. Clayton was a member of the Combat Infantrymen’s Assn, the Anzio Beach Veterans Assn, the American Legion, Post #945; and the Telecom Pioneers. Surviving are daughters: Linda Betts, of Roundup, Montana; and Judith Kennedy, of Bethlehem; 7 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by sons, Edward, of Easton; and James, of Bethlehem Twp.; and a brother, Waldo, of Reading. Services will be at 4 PM on Saturday at the Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1418 Main Street, Hellertown. A viewing will be from 3-4 PM. Interment will be private.
